Welcome to the submission page for the 2019 Spirited Stories Flash Fiction Contest!

Amateur writers in grades 4-12 are invited to submit their original flash fiction work inspired by ghosts, goblins, and other ghoulish spirits. Winners will be notified prior to the “Spirited Stories” Main Event happening on October 11, 2019 from 6:30-8:00 p.m. at Everyday Joe’s Coffee House in Old Town Fort Collins. Winning writers will have the opportunity to read their story to the audience or can opt to have someone from the Library District read it on their behalf.

Submissions close at 11:59 p.m. MST on September 15, 2019.

Official Contest Rules

  1. ENTRY PERIOD
    • The contest begins at 9:00 a.m. MST on September 1, 2019 and ends at 11:59 p.m. MST on September 15, 2019. Winners will be notified by October 7, 2019.
  2. ELIGIBILITY
    • You must be in grades 4-12.
    • You must live in the Poudre River Public Library District service boundary area.
  3. CONTEST ENTRY GUIDELINES
    • You may submit one (1) entry.
    • Entries must be minimum of 500 words and maximum of 1000 words in length and must be appropriate for a PG audience.
    • Entries must include a title, the author’s name, and grade.
    • After submitting your entry online, you must send an email with your name, grade, story title, phone number, and email address to librarycontest@poudrelibraries.org.
    • Submissions must be your own original work.
    • There will be an optional flash fiction workshop on Saturday, September 7th from 2-4 pm with local author Brian Kaufman at Old Town Library where you can get tips on writing spooky flash fiction stories! Registration is free. (Biblioboard will also be demonstrated.)
  4. HOW TO ENTER
    • Upload your flash fiction story using the Library District’s contest submission portal at any time during the entry period. Late or corrupt entries will not be accepted.
    • All entries must be submitted in one of the accepted file formats: .PDF, .ePub2, or .ePub3.
    • You must read and accept the Terms and Conditions and fill out the required information provided at the time of your submission.
    • By submitting an entry, you agree that the content is your original work and you accept all responsibility and liability if you submit someone else’s work.
    • After submitting your entry online, you must send an email with your name, grade, story title, phone number, and email address to librarycontest@poudrelibraries.org.
    • If you are not able to submit your flash fiction story online through our contest submission portal, please contact teen services librarian Nicole for reasonable accommodation at 970-221-6740 before September 11, 2019.
  5. INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY
    • Contest entries will be archived and accessible to the public on Poudre River Public Library District’s Biblioboard page. At no point is authorship credit removed.
    • Upon submission of your entry to the Contest, you grant to Poudre River Public Library District the non-exclusive, perpetual, royalty-free, no-cost license and right to use your entry in any medium and for promotional purposes including, but not limited to, merchandising, advertising, marketing, and digital communications.
  6. JUDGING CRITERIA AND AWARDS
    • Winners will be chosen by a select panel of judges. Any ties will be broken by the judges and their decision is final.
    • Submissions will be judged based on the following criteria: Does the story fit the contest requirements? Does the story fit the theme of the contest? Is the story creative in its subject matter or view? Does the story stand out from the crowd? Does the story have unintended grammatical flaws that detract from the story?
    • Prizes, in the form of DBA Downtown Bucks gift cards, will be awarded in three age categories: Grades 4-6, Grades 7-9, and Grades 10-12. First place in each category receives $40 DBA Downtown Bucks gift card; second place receives $30; and third place receives $20.
    • Winning stories will be shared at the “Spirited Stories” Main Event at Everyday Joe’s Coffee House on October 11, 2019 beginning at 6:30 p.m.

Poudre River Public Library District reserves the right to cancel or suspend this Contest, and cancel or refuse any entry or any individual winning the Contest.
